After being quiet on the trading front during the Quebec Major Junior League Entry Draft in June, the Saint John Sea Dogs joined the action today.
It was announced today that Saint John has acquired defenceman Spencer MacDonald from the Montreal Junior in exchange for a 2012 eight round draft pick.
MacDonald was drafted by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in the fifth round, 85th overall, in the 2008 QMJHL Entry Draft. He played in two games with the Eagles in 2008-09, recording an assist, no penalties, and an even rating.
The Charlottetown, PEI native was traded to Montreal on June 5, 2009 in the same deal that involved Buffalo Sabres prospect and former Canadian world junior star Luke Adam.
The QMJHL website lists the 18-year old at 5’11” and 176 lbs.
MacDonald has spent the last two seasons with the Maritime Junior A Hockey League’s Summerside Western Capitals. In 39 games last season, MacDonald recorded four goals and 18 assists to go along with 74 penalty minutes. In 2008-09, the blue liner registered no goals, three assists and 48 penalty minutes in 37 matches.
The Islander played on the same Team Atlantic squad as Kevin Gagne and Nathan Beaulieu at the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Championships. In three games, he recorded no points and two penalty minutes.
MacDonald will participate in Sea Dogs Training Camp beginning in two weeks. If all goes well for him, he could play on a team that will have a solid defence core this season.
