SEA DOGS HIT THE ICE

On-ice sessions began this morning at Harbour Station as Saint John Sea Dogs training camp officially kicked off.

Team White and Team Blue practiced separately in the morning before having an intrasquad game in the afternoon.

“Team Blue emerged victorious by a final score of 4-3,” reports SaintJohnSeaDogs.com. “Veteran forward Steven Anthony set Mike Thomas up for the game-winning goal in the final minute of play, completing a late-match come-from-behind victory in the process. Import winger Stanislav Galiev tallied 2G-1A-3P for Team Blue in the dramatic win.”

“Everyone played with a lot of energy out there today,” said Sea Dogs Head Coach Gerard Gallant. “Our veterans looked good and our young guys were really competing hard. It was definitely a great way to kick off camp.”

Yesterday, players registered for camp and took part in physical evaluations.

"Everybody is going to get a chance to play a game if they want to play," Gallant said to the Telegraph-Journal about the team’s pre-season games. "It'll be fun to watch these two exhibition games because there will be a lot of kids playing and trying to earn spots on our club. We're looking forward to camp and it's good to see the kids again."

Saint John opens the pre-season this Saturday at 7:00 pm at Harbour Station against the Halifax Mooseheads. A Blue vs White intrasquad game will held Friday in the Port City.

One player who seems to be drawing some attention is forward Scott Oke.

"A guy like (defenceman) Gabriel Bourret probably put on 10 or 12 pounds and he looks real strong this year compared to last year," said Gallant. "(Forward) Aidan Kelly looks strong and big compared to last year. (Forward) Scott Oke also (looks stronger). Having one year under your belt goes a long way."

Oke, who started the season with the Sea Dogs last year with several players away at NHL camps, was also mentioned by News 88.9’s Tim Roszell as a player “who could stick after starting last season with the club.”

Training Camp continues tomorrow at Stu Hurley Arena.

We are hoping to have some pictures from camp up later… somewhere.
