Despite three first overall draft picks in the past five years, no Sea Dog has ever won rookie of the year. That could change this season.
Import Stanislav Galiev leads all QMJHL rookies in scoring with 10 goals and 26 assists in 35 games played this season. Today, he received the Saint John Sea Dogs' RDS mid-season rookie excellence award.
"Through the RDS mid-season rookie excellence awards program, RDS wishes to underline the efforts made by these young men in order to meet today’s demanding challenges," said Michel Gagnon, the Vice-President of Marketing and Sales at RDS in a release. "We’re extremely proud to play a part in their development and we salute their perseverance and talent."
The mid-season rookies become eligible to win the RDS Trophy as the QMJHL’s top rookie. The winner of this prestigious award will be announced at the Golden Puck Awards Gala on March 31st and will receive a bursary worth $1,000.
Galiev has been playing on the same line with stars Mike Hoffman and Nicholas Petersen. He leads all rookies in plus/minus with an impressive +28. The first overall pick in the 2009 CHL Import draft was named the November rookie of month.
