SCHUTZ ON OLYMPIC RADAR

An article on theahl.com has stated that former Sea Dog Felix Schutz is on the radar for the German national men's hockey team for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

“Obviously, it would be a great honor to play in the Olympics,” Schutz said as he stood in the hall of the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester prior to a game against the Monarchs. “It would be incredible but I just have to concentrate on playing my game and hope that will be enough to be selected.”

Schutz was drafted by Saint John in the first round, 41st overall, in the 2005 CHL Import Draft. Schutz played one full season and half of another with the Sea Dogs. In 2005-06, he scored 21 goals and added 31 assists in 65 games played. In 2006-07 he scored four goals and added seven assists in only 18 games.

The German was traded to Val-d'Or in exchange for Alexandre Leduc and Bruno Desjardins. He he had 15 goals and 18 assists in 27 games. He helped the Fourers get to the President's Cup Final but lost in the final to Lewiston.

He was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 2006 in the fourth round, making him the first Sea Dog drafted into the NHL. After playing two years in Europe, he returned to this side of the pond and joined the Sabres AHL affiliate in Portland.

He got off to a slow start and battled injuries this season with the Pirates. He now has five goals and five assists in 21 games.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s been good to finally start scoring, especially with the way things have been going lately and the success we have enjoyed as a team. It’s nice to know that I am helping the team and having a positive impact in games.”

Luckily for Schutz, the German hockey program is not very deep, giving him a legitimate chance to play in Vancouver in February.
