The President’s Cup final resumes tonight in Rimouski.
The Sea Dogs have a 2-0 series lead over the Oceanic entering Game 3. Game time
tonight is 8:30pm Atlantic at Colisee Rimouski. Follow our Live Blog this evening for updates.
Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant told Journal de Quebec on Monday that the three day break would be good for his squad and that he
doesn’t mind the 2-3-2 scheduling format because it requires less travel.
Game 4 is on Thursday night and a Game 5 – if necessary –
would be played on Saturday.
WELCOME BACK
The Sea Dogs will welcome back their captain tonight as
Jonathan Huberdeau returns from a two-game suspension. Huberdeau will play in
his first game since Game 5 of the semifinals against Chicoutimi which was
played on April 28 at Harbour Station.
Huberdeau has nine goals and nine assists in 13 playoff
games this year. He sits fifth in team scoring with 18 points.
ELSEWHERE
The London Knights hold a 2-1 series lead over the
Niagara IceDogs heading into Game 4 of the Ontario Hockey League Championship
Series tonight. That game begins at 8pm in Niagara.
In the Western Hockey League, the Edmonton Oil Kings
evened their series with the Portland Winterhawks at 2-2 with a 4-3 overtime
victory last night. Game 5 of the WHL Championship Series is on Thursday back in Edmonton.
PLAYS OF THE WEEK
The QMJHL website has their Plays of the Week/highlights
from Games 1 and 2 of the President’s Cup final video up. Check that out here.
WOODSTOCK
The Woodstock Slammers fell to 1-2 at the RBC Cup with a
2-1 loss to Penticton Vees last night in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Former Sea Dog
Andrew Langan had the lone Woodstock goal.
The Slammers, who feature Langan, Sea Dogs prospect
Mackenzie Brown, and training camp attendee Philip Fife, won 4-1 over the
Portage Terriers on Monday night. Their other game was a 4-1 loss to the host
Humboldt Broncos. Their next game is tomorrow against the Soo Thunderbirds.
QMJHL WINGERS
Hockey’s Future has an article about the top 10 wingers
in the QMJHL. Not surprisingly, the Sea Dogs dominate the list with Jonathan
Huberdeau at No. 1, Charlie Coyle at No. 2, Tomas Jurco at No. 3, Stanislav
Galiev at No. 4, and Ryan Tesink at No. 9. According to HF, “there are 13
wingers in the QMJHL that have been drafted into the NHL and six of those
players play in Saint John.”
PRICELESS MOMENT
Another Sea Dogs game from last year’s Memorial Cup has
become a MasterCard Memorial Cup Priceless Moment. This time its Saint John’s
3-2 overtime win over the Owen Sound Attack, a game that we would argue is one
of the greatest in franchise history. The video, hosted by Rob Faulds and Sam
Cosentino, can be seen on the Memorial Cup website.
GALLANT
At 15 minute mark of this Minnesota Wild podcast, Sea
Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant is a guest. He talks about the Sea Dogs, how to
pronounce Beaulieu, the Q, and Coyle and Phillips obviously.
JGL
Over at Sportsnet.ca, Patrick King has an article on
Oceanic star defenseman Jerome Gauthier-Leduc.
"We figured after a while when we looked around the
league, a lot of teams were extremely strong offensively," Oceanic general
manager Philippe Boucher said about his team. "If we were going to have a
chance to compete with all of them, we needed a strong group on D."
