Sea Dogs Notebook

TONIGHT
With the team scheduled to depart Wednesday, the Sea Dogs are inviting fans to a celebratory Memorial Cup sendoff from 5 to 6:30 p.m. tonight at Harbour Station.

Fans will have the opportunity to fill Harbour Station, get another glimpse at the President's Cup, and wish the players well as they prepare to defend their national championship. Fans are also encouraged to bring posters and letters of encouragement for the players as they look to add a second Memorial Cup to their back-to-back QMJHL titles.

WOODSTOCK
Heartbreak for Andrew Langan, Mackenzie Brown, Philip Fife and the Woodstock Slammers last night as the Penticton Vees scored on a power play goal in the final minute of play to win the RBC Cup. The Slammers battled back from a 2-0 first period deficit and took a 3-2 lead early in the third. But it wasn’t meant to be this season as the Vees scored twice in the final frame to win 4-3.

“Good time in Humboldt with the boys! Unforgettable season, thanks for everything boys,” tweeted Brown.

PLAYS OF THE WEEK
The QMJHL website has a President’s Cup final edition of the Plays of the Week. Check that out here.

JURCO
Over at MLive.com, Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill describes Tomas Jurco as a “Marian Hossa-type player.''

“He's a leader on a very good team, a top-six forward,'' Nill said. “He's got high-end skill.''

He was overshadowed by Charlie Coyle and Stanislav Galiev but Jurco had an excellent post-season. He finished fourth in the league in playoff scoring with 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points. He collected five goals and five assists in the President’s Cup final.

COYLE
Sea Dogs forward Charlie Coyle was a guest on The Pipeline Show on Saturday. He talks about winning the QMJHL’s playoff MVP award, making the switch to the CHL, his play this past season, and lots of other stuff.

A TO Z
Good read over at TVA Sports as Mikael Lalancette gives an A to Z look at the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup. Lots of Habs prospects in this year’s tournament. And who will get the call in goal for Shawinigan?

REGULAR SEASON CHAMPS
As someone pointed out on Twitter, this year’s Memorial Cup will feature the regular season champions from all three CHL leagues.

Saint John had a record of 50-15-0-3 in the regular season for 103 points, London finished 49-18-0-1 for 99 points, and Edmonton had a final record of 50-15-3-4 for 107 points. The WHL has a 72-game schedule while the Q and OHL feature 68-game schedules.

The four teams in this year’s tournament all finished in the top five of the BMO CHL MasterCard Top 10 Rankings. Saint John was No. 1, London No. 3, Edmonton No. 4, and Shawinigan No. 5. The Tri-City Americans were the No. 2 ranked team but were eliminated in the semifinals by the Portland Winterhawks.
