Fun With Playoff Numbers

It was quite a playoff run for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

They swept three of four playoff series en route to a President’s Cup win. They finished the post-season with a 16-1 record. Their only loss came in overtime. They scored 103 goals in 17 games. They clinched their second straight Quebec Major Junior Hockey League title with an 8-0 road win.

So before we start looking ahead to the Memorial Cup, let’s take a look back at some of the other playoff numbers the Sea Dogs achieved during their impressive run.

Here’s a look at some individual numbers.

• Stanislav Galiev (34), Charlie Coyle (34), Zack Phillips (32), and Tomas Jurco (29) all finished top four in post-season scoring.
• Galiev (16), Coyle (15), Jurco (13), and Danick Gauthier (13) all finished top four in goals scored.
• Zack Phillips (23), Coyle (19), and Galiev (18) all finished top three in assists.
• Jonathan Huberdeau finished tied for second in shorthanded goals with two.
• Coyle led the league in game winning goals scored in the playoffs, registering five in 17 games.
• Coyle also led the league in first goals with four.
• Huberdeau led the league in insurance goals with five. Jurco finished second with three.
• Nathan Beaulieu finished fourth in penalty minutes with 32.
• Aidan Kelly finishes with the league’s best shooting percentage with a rating of 42.9%. He scored three goals on seven shots.
• The Sea Dogs dominated the plus/minus category. Galiev finished a league best +30. 10 Saint John players finished within the top 13 in the plus/minus category.
• Galiev finished in a tie with Halifax's Nathan MacKinnon for the league lead in "dangerous shots" with 50.
• Galiev finished second in total shots with 83.
• Defensemen Nathan Beaulieu, Charles Roussel, and Kevin Gagne all finished with 15 points.
• Mathieu Corbeil finished second in goals against average (2.18) and save percentage (0.917) but, obviously, first in wins with 16. He finished third in playing minutes with 1075:13.
• There were only three penalty shot goals scored in the playoffs. Coyle had two of them and MacKinnon the other.

And here’s a look at some team numbers.

• The Sea Dogs finished with an average attendance of 5,522 at Harbour Station, placing them third in the league behind Quebec and Halifax.
• Saint John finished a perfect 9-0 at home and 7-1 on the road. They outscored opponents 59-20 at Harbour Station and 44-19 on the road.
• The Dogs were a perfect 13-0 when scoring first.
• Saint John scored three shorthanded goals which ties them with three other teams for most in the playoffs.
• The Sea Dogs outscored opponents 103-39 for an incredible +64 goal differential in 17 games.
• The Sea Dogs outscored opponents 28-8 in first periods, 42-18 in second periods, and 30-12 in third periods.
• Saint John was 10-0 when leading after one and 11-0 when leading after two. They were 0-0-1-0 when trailing after one.
• Only twice in 17 playoff games were the Sea Dogs outshot by an opponent. They won both of those games. 
• The Sea Dogs’ special teams were good in the playoffs. They finished with the second best power play (28.2%) and best penalty kill (88.2%).
