Despres Nets Winner For Penguins

Simon Despres scored at 12:08 of the second overtime period to give the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 3-2 win in Game 5 of the American Hockey League’s Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Penguins now trail the St. John’s IceCaps 3-2 heading into Game 6.

It was Despres’ first career AHL playoff goal and just his second point. He had five goals and 10 assists in 44 regular season games.

The former Saint John Sea Dogs defenseman was also a +2 and had two shots.

"This one is very big because we’re on the brink of elimination,” Despres told The Citizens Voice. “Biggest goal of my career, definitely."

“I was very happy,” he added. “I was very tired, so I was relieved the game was finally over.”

Also scoring in the game was former Sea Dog defender Alex Grant. He gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead at 2:18 of the third, a lead that would be very short lived as St. John’s tied it up just under two minutes later. Grant finished a +1 and had three shots in his third star performance.

Grant, playing in his third season at the pro level, has two goals and four assists in 10 playoff games this year. He had 10 markers and 27 helpers in 61 regular season contests.

Via the Penguins, here are the highlights. It's on like Donkey Kong.

Game 6 is Friday at Mile One Centre.
