Cup final series.
PREVIEW
SAINT JOHN – Here we go again.
For a third straight year, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey
League Championship Series kicks off at Harbour Station with the Saint John Sea
Dogs playing as hosts. This year, they’ll battle the Rimouski Oceanic for the
President’s Cup and a berth in the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament. Game 1 of the
best-of-seven series is tonight at 8pm.
For the Sea Dogs, it was a relatively smooth ride to get
here. They swept Cape Breton in the first round and then swept the Baie-Comeau
Drakkar in the quarterfinals. They then faced the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in the
third round and won that series in five. The Sags gave the Sea Dogs a good run
though with the three final games going to overtime.
For Rimouski, it was a bit more of a challenge to get
here. After sweeping Val-d’Or in the first round, they needed seven games to
beat the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in seven games in the quarterfinals. In
the semifinals, they needed six games to dispatch the Halifax Mooseheads.
The Oceanic will certainly have their hands full with a
powerful and experienced Saint John squad. Even with captain Jonathan Huberdeau
suspended for the first two games of this thing, the Sea Dogs are still the
heavy favourites to win the QMJHL title for a second straight year.
It’s not a surprise to see the Sea Dogs here. They
finished first overall in the regular season with a record of 50-15-0-3. They
were built to win this season. As for the Oceanic, it’s a bit of a surprise to
see them in this year’s final. They finished seventh overall in the regular
season standings with a record of 40-26-2-0 and then had to pull off two minor
upsets in the playoffs.
"Nobody expected Rimouski to be in the final, but
from the trade period on, they were a real good team and they're stacked up
pretty good on the blue line and their players are overachieving,” Sea Dogs
head coach Gerard Gallant told Sportsnet.ca.
One of the reasons the Oceanic made it to this year’s
final is thanks to their road record in the playoffs. They are 7-2 away from
home and have outscored opponents 31-24. Meanwhile, the Sea Dogs are a perfect
7-0 at home this post-season.
