POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 1, Mooseheads 3

A collection of recaps from last night’s 3-1 Saint John Sea Dogs loss to the Halifax Mooseheads…

Our recap. Darcy Ashley had a goal and an assist as the Halifax Mooseheads defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs 3-1 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action on Friday night at the Metro Centre.

The Chronicle Herald’s recap. Maybe we can just chalk up Friday’s game at the Metro Centre as the calm before the storm.

Metro Halifax’s recap. They can’t all be pretty.

News 88.9’s recap. Featuring Tim Roszell's goal calls.

The Canadian Press’ recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs got an early preview Friday as to what they could face in the first round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs.

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs couldn’t come back against the Halifax Mooseheads as the top team in the Canadian Hockey League took a 3-1 decision over the Sea Dogs.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without Jason Cameron (minor lower body according to News 88.9), Steven Duda (healthy), and Jeremy Doucet (healthy) on Friday night.

YESTERDAY: As you’ve probably heard, the Sea Dogs left early on Friday so they could attend the funeral of Stephen MacAulay’s mother, Jean, who passed away this week after a long battle with cancer. Even Jonathan Huberdeau flew in for the funeral.

ASHLEY: Darcy Ashley extended his point streak to 15 games with a goal and an assist last night. Ashley, who was named first star, has 25 points during his point streak.

DROUIN: The Sea Dogs managed to keep Jonathan Drouin to just one point – an assist - on Friday night. He and Ben Duffy each have 105 points now to lead the league. Drouin has played 19 fewer games than Duffy. Drouin also extended his point streak to 29 games.

MACKINNON: The Sea Dogs also managed to keep Nathan MacKinnon to just one point – a goal – last night. MacKinnon was playing in his first home game since February 6 due to a lower body injury. Despite playing in only 43 games this year, the draft eligible forward has 31 goals and 43 assists for 74 points.

TSOGKAS: Andreas Tsogkas scored Saint John’s only goal last night. It was his third of the season. He has three goals and eight assists in 56 games this season.

SHORTHANDED: Tsogkas’ goal was a shorthanded marker, something the Mooseheads have surprisingly struggled with this season. Halifax has given up 13 shorthanded goals, tied for third most in the league. Cape Breton has allowed a league high 17.

PENALTIES: Saint John got into penalty trouble again last night, much like they did on Wednesday in Moncton. The Dogs gave the Moose eight power play opportunities but, fortunately for the visitors, Halifax was only able to score once on the man advantage.  Ian Saab and Maxime Villemaire each had six minutes in penalties while Matthew Highmore had four.

ATTENDANCE: Sold out show of 10,595 at the Metro Centre last night.

With one game to go, Halifax is averaging 8,628 fans per game.

VS MOOSE: This was the last meeting of the regular season between the Mooseheads and Sea Dogs. Saint John finishes the season with a 1-7-0-0 record against Halifax while the Mooseheads went 7-0-1-0 against the Sea Dogs.

STANDINGS: With Saint John losing and Sherbrooke picking up a point in their shootout loss, the Phoenix are now two points ahead of the Sea Dogs in the battle for 15th overall. The Phoenix play their final game of the regular season today in Val-d’Or and a single point would clinch 15th. If the Phoenix lose in regulation today and the Sea Dogs win tomorrow in PEI, Saint John would clinch 15th due to winning the tiebreaker. Got it? Good.

RECORD: Halifax now has 57 wins with one game to go in the regular season. A win tomorrow against Cape Breton would give them 58, which would tie the league record for wins in a season with three other teams. Saint John had 58 in 2010-11.

NOTES: Early in the first, a Stephen Anderson shot went off both posts and stayed out. It went under review shortly after and was called no goal. The image above was shown video board at the Metro Centre… Oliver Cooper had four hits… Jonathan Drouin had a Mooseheads high six shots… Saint John out hit Halifax 13-11… fans did the wave in the third period. Acceptable because this game was basically a snoozer.
