Former Saint John Sea Dogs goaltender Travis Fullerton is
a national champion once again.
The UNB Varsity Reds blanked the Saint Mary’s Huskies 2-0
last night in Saskatoon, winning the 2013 University Cup. It was UNB’s fifth
national title in school history and fourth since 2007.
For Fullerton, it was his third national championship
having helped the club win in 2009 and 2011.
The Riverview native fell into the role of backup
goaltender this year because of the solid play of Dan LaCosta. LaCosta, who has
seen action in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets, made 17 saves for the
shutout win last night.
It’s unclear where Fullerton, a fifth year player with
the V-Reds, will play next season. This year, he went 8-4 in the regular season
with a 2.23 GAA and .877 SV%.
Fullerton played a season-and-a-half with Saint John,
helping the team reach the QMJHL semi-final for the first time in 2008.
Former Sea Dogs captain Mike Thomas was also part of last
night’s celebrations. Because Thomas played pro hockey last year, he had to “red
shirt” this season. He’ll play for the Reds next season.
