Phoenix Widen Gap

SAINT JOHN – The expansion Sherbrooke Phoenix just keep on rolling.

Thanks to a 6-3 home win over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies tonight, the Phoenix are 3-0-1-0 in their past four games and 5-3-1-1 in their last 10. They are playing well down the stretch, well enough to widen the gap between themselves and the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Sherbrooke, 20-35-3-5 for 48 points, sit 15th overall in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League standings. With Saint John losing 3-2 to the PEI Rocket tonight, the Phoenix are now three points ahead of the 16th-place Sea Dogs (22-40-1-0 for 45 points).

Both squads have already clinched post-season spots, but which team finishes where will determine playoff seeding and, probably more importantly, will determine where they select in this June’s draft. Whoever finishes 16th will select third overall while the other will draft fourth (unless the Ryan Tesink/Armada thing screws that up).

Both teams have five games remaining on their regular season schedules. The Sea Dogs host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Friday and the Phoenix host the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.

  1. I wonder if Sha wine again or Cape Breton have any first round picks this year.

  2. So, I am hoping our great announcer keeps everyone after Oh Canada on their feet and go into Fridays game clapping and "Stompin" to "The Good Ole Hockey Game".
