Sea Dogs loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles…

against the Screaming Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Centre 200. Saint John was
riding the high of a win against the Titan on Friday night.

Sea Dogs failed to capitalize on an opportunity to move into 15th place in the
Quebec Major Junior Hockey League standings when they dropped a 3-2 decision to
the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Sunday afternoon.

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs
dropped a 3-2 contest against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Sunday afternoon
in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.
CapeBretonEagles.com’s recap. The Cape Breton Screaming
Eagles used three power play goals to defeat the Saint John Sea Dogs 3-2 in
front of 2,109 fand on hand at Centre 200 on Sunday.
SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without defensemen Jurij
Repe (healthy) and Steven Duda (healthy) along with forward Marcus Cuomo (healthy)
on Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles were missing, like, half their team again.
They dressed 17 skaters.
Not in the lineup for Cape Breton: Loic Leduc, Kyle Farrell, Timothe Simard, Stephen Midensky, Jakub Culek and William Carrier. #qmjhl

SHORTHANDED: Cape Breton headed to the power play at 8:19
of the first but it would be the Sea Dogs opening the scoring. Mackenzie Brown
sent the puck towards the net and was redirected beautifully by Maxime
Villemaire to make it 1-0 Saint John at 9:05. It was Saint John’s fourth shorthanded
goal of the season which ties them for the league low with Drummondville.
VILLEMAIRE: It’s hard to imagine what Saint John’s
offense would be like in the second half without Maxime Villemaire. He scored
his 12th goal of the season in the first period on Sunday. He now
has 12 goals and 10 assists in 26 games since rejoining the club.
ABBOTT: Michael Abbott fired a bomb from the top of the
circle while on a power play at 19:31 of the second, giving Saint John a 2-1
advantage. It was Abbott’s fifth goal of the season and third in 20 games with
the Sea Dogs.
19:31: Two goals scored at the 19:31 mark of this game –
one in the first and one in the second. Weird.
5-on-3: For the second straight game, the Sea Dogs had
try and kill off a long five-on-three power play. With Jakub Izacky and
Villemaire in the box midway through the third, Charles-Eric Legare tied the
game at 2-2 at 10:22. Then at 13:56 with Ian Saab in the box, Jonathan Oligny
put the Eagles ahead. The Dogs weren’t too disciplined on Sunday.
FOURNIER: Another tough loss for Alex Fournier. He made
31 saves and fell to 1-12-0-0 on the year with a 5.33 GAA and 0.858
SV%. Saint John has three games remaining in regular season so it’s possible
that he may get one more start.
VS CB: The Sea Dogs will finish the season with a 5-3-0-0
record against the Screaming Eagles while Cape Breton will finish with a 3-4-0-1
record against Saint John. This was, thankfully, the final meeting of the
season between the Sea Dogs and Screaming Eagles.
STANDINGS: Saint John missed a huge opportunity to move ahead
of Sherbrooke in the overall standings. A win would have put the Dogs one-point
ahead of the Phoenix but instead will remain one-back in 16th
place. Saint John could certainly still move ahead but it’s going to a tough go
with road games against Moncton, Halifax, and PEI.
NOTES: This was Cape Breton’s second-to-last home game of
the season. They have already been eliminated from the playoffs… the Sea Dogs
wore their third jerseys again on Sunday… Stephen Anderson had a breakaway
early in the first but sent it wide… Telus lost the Saint John audio feed in
the second period. It returned several minutes later. Great work as always by
Telus… Maxime Villemaire had a Sea Dogs high six shots… Olivier LeBlanc had
four hits… Charles-Eric Legare had six shots for the Eagles… Zachery Moody had
three hits… no goals were scored at even strength. There were four power play
goals and a shorthanded marker.
