RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 11-1

FINAL: Saint John 1, Halifax 11
HALIFAX - The Halifax Mooseheads handed the Saint John Sea Dogs their sixth straight loss on Saturday night at Scotiabank Centre.

Saint John's offensive struggles continued, falling 11-1 to the Eastern Conference leading Halifax Mooseheads. The Sea Dogs have scored just four goals in their past five games and have been shutout twice during that span.

The ice was certainly tilted in Halifax's favour on Saturday. Saint John allowed three goals in both the first and second periods and then scored five in the third. The Dogs recorded 26 shots in the loss - which included a three shot middle frame.

Raphael Lavoie and Keith Getson each scored twice for Halifax while singles came from Marcel Barinka, Xavier Parent, Ben Higgins, Jake Ryczek, Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Antoine Morand and Arnaud Durandeau. Cole McLaren made 25 saves in the win.

Zachary Bouthillier allowed six goals on 32 shots in the first 40 minutes of play. Mathias Savoie of the midget AAA Moncton Flyers, who was called up for the game, allowed five goals on 15 shots in the third.

The game had a heated start when Joel Bishop put a big open ice hit on Jeremie Poirier. Christian Clark quickly dropped the gloves with the Bishop following the hit.

Halifax jumped out to a 2-0 lead in no time. A 5:32, Barinka cut through the top of the crease and beat Bouthillier upstairs. Then just 22 seconds later, Parent fired a shot from the slot that beat the Sea Dogs netminder high glove side.

With 1:08 left in the first, Jared McIsaac fired a point shot that went through some traffic and past Bouthillier, giving Halifax a 3-0 advantage after 20 minutes of action. Credit for the goal was later given to Higgins.

The Mooseheads grabbed a 4-0 lead at 4:04 of the second. On a power play, Ryczek fired a wrist shot past Bouthillier, extending Halifax's lead. Then at 9:23, Lavoie scored on a scramble in the crease to give the Moose a 5-0 advantage.

Bouthillier got himself in trouble at 15:58. After going behind his net to play the puck, the 'tender was unable to get back in position for Groulx's shot, which gave Halifax a 6-0 lead. Saint John was outshot 15-3 in the second period.

Savoie took over the Sea Dogs net to start the third. Just 34 seconds in, Getson beat the 17-year-old upstairs - the first shot he faced - to give Halifax a 7-0 lead. Then at 2:11, Lavoie scored his second of the game on a rebound to make it 8-0.

Morand ripped a wrister top corner at 9:22, giving the Mooseheads a 9-0 lead. Then with Bishop in the box, Getson sped past the Saint John defense at 10:54 and beat Savoie with backhand shot, making it 10-0.

With Bishop still in the box, Saint John scored on a scramble at 11:57, making it 10-1. Credit for the power play goal was given to Prikryl.

Halifax added another on a power play at 14:17 thanks to Durandeau, which made it 11-1.

LINEUP
SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without forwards Yohan Plamondon and Aiden MacIntosh; and goaltender Mikhail Denisov.

NOTES: Saint John went with 11 forwards and seven defensemen... Carson Gallant was the only affiliate in the Sea Dogs lineup on Saturday. He was used as a forward again... former Sea Dog Ostap Safin remains out of the Mooseheads lineup with an injury. He is slowly nearing a return, though... goaltender Mathias Savoie, a fourth-round pick of Saint John in the 2018 QMJHL Entry Draft, backed up Zachary Bouthillier for the first two periods then came on in relief to start the third - his first QMJHL appearance. Savoie has been playing with the midget AAA Moncton Flyers this season... there was a moment of silence for the Barho children before the game... Halifax improved to 6-0 against Saint John this season... Filip Prikryl's stick flew into the crowd early in the third period. An usher was given a chorus of boos when he took the stick away from a fan... this was the most goals the Sea Dogs have given up in a game this season. The team record for goals allowed in a game is 12, set twice during the 2006-07 season.
NEXT GAME: The Sea Dogs visit the Charlottetown Islanders tomorrow at 3 p.m.
