CHL DAILY: SEASON BEGINS TONIGHT

  • The 2009-2010 Canadian Hockey League season begins tonight when the QMJHL's Drummondville Voltigeus play host to Val-d'Or. The Volts will be lifting the 2009 Presidents Cup banner to the rafters.
  • QMJHL commissioner Gilles Courteau held his annual press conference yesterday to officially open the leagues 41st season. On the agenda were the new education benefits for players, showcasing the 18 teams new Reebok Edge Jerseys, and the user fees now required for the Telus web casts. This will be the first time fans will have to pay for live web casts. The opening games, which will be played on September 10 and 11, available on qmjhl.mytelus.com will be free. Starting on September 12, hockey fans will be able to watch QMJHL games for $3.95 per game or to subscribe to the entire season including the playoffs for $199.95.
  • The league also announced that all 18 teams will select a home date to wear pink jerseys in support of Breast Cancer Research. The Halifax Mooseheads held an event last season called "pink at the rink," an event the Sea Dogs will host this season.
  • The PEI Rocket will begin the season shorthanded as forward Chris Doyle has been suspended for four games after purposely colliding with an official in a pre-season game. The Rocket play there first game tomorrow at home against Moncton.
