Bathurst- Jonathan Huberdeau appeared in his first Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game and delivered as promised. Huberdeau tied the game and won it with the shootout winner to give the Sea Dogs a 4-3 win at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre.
Tempers started brewing early when "AAA" call-up Tyrone Sock got into a match of fisticuffs with the Titan's Vincent Arseneau. Both players got a few good shots in to kick off the 2009-10 campaign. Both received major's at 14:08.
Acadie-Bathurst opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from Jonathan Lessard. The veteran winger redirected a fast-moving pass off the stick of Taylor Lambke to the back of the Sea Dogs’ net to tally the first marker of the evening for either team in the eleventh minute of play. Assists went to Lambke and Daniel Tanel.
At 10:12 of the second period, history was made. Russian import Stanislav Galiev got his first goal in his Canadian Hockey League career as he slapped a wrister past Nicholas Champion to tie the game 1-1.
Julien Tembly scored to give Bathurst a 2-1 lead. He finished off a nifty passing play with a well-placed shot that eluded St-Laurent with helpers going to Lambke and Danick Malouin.
Alex Leduc began his magical comeback with his first goal since the 07-08 campaign with an assist to rookie Gabriel Bourret. That tied the game 2-2.
Jonathan Lessard got his second of the game from Lambke and Derek Famulare to give the Titan yet another lead. The lead was short lived.
First round pick Jonathan Huberdeau scored his first career QMJHL goal to tie the game at 3-3 with 5:01 remaining. A great play by Kevin Gagne gave Huberdeau the puck and he banked it off of Champion. Slovakian rookie Tomas Jurco got his first point with an assist.
Karel St-Laurent was huge to help send the game to the eventual shootout by making several great saves on an Acadie-Bathurst power play.
With the Shootout tied at one goal apiece, St-Laurent stopped Lessard to allow Jonathan Huberdeau to score the winner and become a hero for Saint John.
Both teams were 1/4 on the power play and had 36 shots on goal.
