MAINEIACS BLOW OUT SAINT JOHN
Station Nation Post-Game
The Lewiston Maineiacs are predicted to finish in the bottom of the QMJHL standings this season. They didn't play like it in a 6-1 beat down over the Saint John Sea Dogs at Willie O'Ree Place in New Brunswick's capital city last night.
The Maineiacs took a two to nothing lead after the first period. Nick Spear looked shaky in goal. Spear was not the scheduled starter as Karel St-Laurent was listed to start. This is St-Laurent's second straight missed start. He has yet to play a full sixty minute game this pre-season. Eric Gelinas and Pierre-Olivier Morin had the Lewiston goals.
Stefan Foutnier scored the lone goal of the second with Gelinas getting his second point with an assist. Saint John had five power plays and were unable to capitalize on any.
Fournier got his second goal early in the second and put the game out of reach with a 4-0 lead. Former Moncton Wildcat and overager Matt Boyle made it 5-0 with a power play goal at 14:35. Kevin Gagne scored the only Sea Dogs goal as he beat Adrien Lemay down low at 17:14 on the power play. The Fredericton off-ice officials were generous and gave Mike Thomas an assist, although it appeared he wasn't on the ice. Samuel Grenache finished off the scoring with a beautiful tip in at 19:17 to end the game.
Adrien Lemay was solid in the game making 36 saves. Marc-Antoine Gelinas, who came in to start the second, and Spear made 28 combined saves.
Saint John and Lewiston finish the pre-season with records of 4-2-0-0.
Notes: Lewiston is now 2-0 in pre-season action in Fredericton… Although it was a Lewiston home game, fans cheered on the Sea Dogs all game with dozens of Sea Dogs shirts, jersey’s, and foam fingers in the crowd… Fredericton natives Mike Thomas and Zach Phillips were both given long and loud receptions… Splash came out of retirement for the game… Mike Thomas looked like a hit man all game going out of his way to attempt to make hits… Nick Spear was announced as Karel St-Laurent all game… the Sea Dogs donated a large sum of money to the Fredericton AAA Canadiens hockey program.
Next Game: Regular Season Opener. Friday, September.11, 7:30 pm. Saint John Sea Dogs @ Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
