FINAL: Saint John 0, Moncton 4
BOUCTOUCHE – After sitting near the top of
league in goals scored for much of the pre-season, the Saint John Sea Dogs
wrapped up exhibition play with a 4-0 loss to the Moncton Wildcats at the JK
Irving Centre on Friday night.
Liam Murphy, Adam Holwell, Conor Garland
and Eric Leger all scored for Moncton and Zachary Fortin made 32 saves for the
shutout victory.
Alex Bishop, playing his first and only
full game of the pre-season, made 35 stops in the loss.
Murphy scored the only goal of the first
period, connecting at 8:40. The Sea Dogs once again got into some penalty
trouble in the opening frame, taking three minors to Moncton's one, but were able
to get out the period without a man advantage marker against.
In the second, Holwell scored late at 15:11
to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage heading into the third.
At 4:22 of the final frame, Garland scored
his second of the pre-season. Then at 12:49, Leger connected to make it a 4-0
final.
With 23 seconds remaining, Jason Bell was
given a game misconduct for boarding. He was also given an instigator penalty
for a fight against Lane Cormier.
Final shots were 39-32 in favour of the
Wildcats. Both teams went 0-for-5 on the power play.
With the loss, Saint John finishes the
pre-season with a 3-3-0-0 record. Moncton finishes with a 5-1-0-0 record.
- The attendance in Bouctouche was 927.
- Jason Bell replaced Thomas Chabot in the Sea Dogs’ lineup. Forwards Julien Tessier, Alexander Kealey and Dawson Theede were all scratched again.
- Joe Veleno led Saint John with five shots.
NEXT GAME: The Sea Dogs open up the
regular season at home against the Halifax Mooseheads on Sept. 12.
