SAINT JOHN – The Sea Dogs have traded
defenseman Jack vanBoekel to the Val-d’Or Foreurs.
In exchange, Saint John will receive a
third-round draft pick in the 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft from the Foreurs.
Last season with the Sea Dogs, the
19-year-old registered nine assists and 118 penalty minutes in 48 games. A 12th-round
pick of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection,
Saint John brought vanBoekel to the QMJHL last year.
Listed at 6’07 and 216 lbs, vanBoekel
added some size to team’s backend. But with so many quality d-men – Thomas
Chabot, Jakub Zboril, Luke Green, Adam Bateman, Jason Bell, Oliver Felixson and
Bailey Webster – it has been assumed all summer that somebody had to be moved.
Plus, 2015 draft picks Vincent Martineau, Pierre-Luc Lurette and Ian Smallwood have looked
good during camp.
The Foreurs visit Saint John on
Halloween. The Sea Dogs visit Val-d’Or on Feb. 20.
